Several Suffolk County communities will be holding meetings this week as ShotSpotter returns to the area soon.
The Suffolk Legislature voted to reinstate the $1.6 program at nine different locations in October 2022 after it was removed in 2019 because it was found to disproportionately impact people of color. Those locations are Bay Shore, Brentwood, Central Islip, Coram, Huntington Station, Mastic, North Amityville, North Bellport and Wyandanch.
The communities where the Shot Spotter sensors were chosen because of previous call for shots fired, according to police.
"Help make the residents a little more comfortable to you know interact with their police and to be a part of the solution of keeping our town safe, cause it can't just happen by itself," said Huntington Matters president June Margolin. "You know the best community/police relationships happen when you work together."
Three community meetings are being held this week, with the first one Monday at the Second Precinct in Huntington. The second is Tuesday at the Brentwood Public Library, and the third at the Sixth Precinct in Selden on May 17.
