The City of Glen Cove is looking at raising taxes more than 8% while also considering laying off several employees to make up for lost revenue -- but some are determined to not let that happen.
Outside City Hall, local CSEA Union members protested the possible moves, saying they want the city to revisit the proposed budget and find other expenses to cut.
During a meeting Tuesday night, the mayor said he is open to suggestion, but that the city might be out of options.
"We went back in with a scalpel and went department by department and line by line and cut everything we could, and we were still at 12.5 to 13%. We went back in and as a last resort we looked at the other individuals we're going to lay off probably," says Glen Cove Mayor Timothy Tenke.
"It's unacceptable. We were here during COVID and we were considered essential workers and this is what we get in return," says Glen Cove CSEA President Maureen Pappachirstou.
The union claims the positions being eliminated include the director of the Parks and Recreation Department, two clerks, three laborers and a food services worker.
The mayor told News 12 that the Parks and Recreation Department is being consolidated into the Department of Public Works and the Youth Bureau.
