The moments leading up to Jesus' crucifixion were brought to life through the streets of Allerton as devoted parishioners from St. Lucy’s Church watched with reverence this Good Friday. "I enjoy it," said churchgoer Hyacinth Grant. "And to see what Jesus went through. He died on the cross for us."
The tradition, known as the Way of the Cross, honors the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the days leading up to Easter — the holiest day for Christians.
"It means a lot to me because it’s like the whole family, all of my family, friends, and everyone around here," said Nicole Barbosa, "We even have people who aren’t religious come over here and celebrate the birth of Christ."
Worshippers say words can’t even begin to describe the amazing feeling they have knowing the sacrifice Jesus made for them.
"I just feel happy," said Diana Ocasio. "It’s like a feeling that comes inside you that’s hard to explain."
Ocasio has been attending St. Lucy’s for more than 15 years. She says this year’s Way of the Cross holds even more meaning as the church’s elementary school is set to close in June.
"It’s kind of sad to see the little kids that were coming to the school, they’re not going to get the chance to graduate," she said. "And seeing those that are here now that are getting the chance, it’s sad for the community. Because the school has been here for years."
Services will continue at St. Lucy’s through the weekend leading up to Easter Sunday.
