Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will be at Island Harvest Food Bank in Melville Friday to announce legislation aimed at ending food deserts on Long Island.

Food deserts are areas where a significant number of residents do not have easy access to a grocery store.

The legislation would incentivize grocery stores to open locations in underserved communities that are currently forced to turn to corner stores or convenience stores.

The proposal would give $50 million in annual mandatory federal funding to encourage supermarkets to establish new locations.
