A former employee is responsible for damaging a Greenlawn school, school officials say.

Police say a man entered Oldfield Middle School Tuesday at 4 a.m.

According to police, the man caused about $250,000 worth of damage.

The suspect was transported to a hospital for evaluation, and was charged with burglary and criminal mischief following their release.

School officials say the man resigned from the district in February 2023. They say he vandalized property and drew a swastika somewhere inside on Tuesday morning.

The Harborfields Central School District sent home a note to school families informing them of the incident, but said that no students or staff were in the school at the time.

“Our team is working swiftly to assess and repair the damage so that our staff and students are not impacted when they return,” the letter said.

The person’s identity has not been released.

The Harborfields School District said an initial assessment concluded:

  • Damage to exterior doors and door frames

  • Damage to ballistic glass in the security vestibule

  • Damage to interior security doors

  • Damage to a television in the vestibule area

  • Damage to computers in the security booth and in the business office

  • Broken display case

  • Broken copy machine in the business office

  • Damage to an interior office door

The incident was contained to the front entrance of Oldfield Middle School, the vestibule and security area, and one office suite, which houses the district business office. The total cost of damage includes the estimated costs associated with remediation. A more refined cost is still being determined in consultation with our insurance adjusters.
