Police say a drunk driver jumped a curb and plowed into a family on a sidewalk Monday.
Police say 66-year-old Mitchell Messling, of Massapequa, lost control of his electric BMW Monday afternoon on West Merrick Road in Freeport and drove into a woman, her boyfriend and two children, ages 9 and 11.
According to court documents, police at the scene said Messling had glassy eyes and slurred speech. He was given a Breathalyzer almost two hours after the crash. Court documents state his blood alcohol level was 0.17 -- more than twice the legal limit. Messling also allegedly told officers at the scene, "I'm coming from home," heading to Jones Beach and "I had one drink, it was vodka Sprite."
Doctors say the victims will be OK. They were all in stable condition Tuesday. The 11-year old was airlifted to Cohen Children's Medical Center, where he was treated for a concussion and broken arm.
Messling was arraigned on DWI and assault charges and had his license suspended. He was held on $100,000 bail.
