A young boy in Flanders is being hailed as a hero after he helped deliver his aunt's baby when she unexpectedly went into labor Friday morning.
Miguel Dominguez, 13, says he was watching his siblings when his aunt called his mom complaining of stomach pains.
Shortly after she arrived, she went into labor and Miguel’s mom told him to call 911.
"I was very scared because [...] I was worried the baby was going to die,” he said. "It felt like a fever dream."
Public Safety Dispatcher Chris Brenner walked Miguel through what to do.
Southampton Town Police Officer James Cavanagh was the first to arrive on scene.
"[Miguel] was given instructions, and he was relaying that to his mother who was assisting with the birth,” said Cavanagh. "The kid was amazing. He was very cool, calm. An amazing kid to do that."
Miguel translated instructions to his aunt and mom for over 20 minutes before EMS and police took over.
"To make my aunt lay down flat on the floor and to get her a blanket and a pillow so the baby can rest in,” he said.
Miguel said he stayed strong because he was focused on making sure his new cousin would come out safely.
Miguel's mom Alexsandra Dominguez describes Miguel as her everything and can't put into words just how proud she is of him.
"It's something that I never could have imagined would happen,” she said. "I'm so proud of him. I'm so happy that he's become such a strong boy and that he didn't get scared."
Family members tell News12 both mom and the little baby boy are in perfect condition and resting at Peconic Bay Medical Center.
