A protest targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement was held Sunday in New Cassel following a week of arrests on Long Island.
Earlier this week, the Hempstead Village mayor confirmed ICE agents made several arrests on Thursday, and the Freeport Village mayor told News 12 ICE carried out operations there too. Pictures shared with News 12 appear to show multiple arrests being made this weekend in Huntington.
“What’s happened in Suffolk County over the last few days and across the nation is really terrifying," said Josh Dubnau, of Huntington. “It’s very clear that they’re not deporting French people who have overstayed their visa…it’s people from Latin America, it’s Haitians, it’s people of color.”
A spokesperson with ICE sent News 12 a statement saying:
“ICE New York City is actively investigating immigration crimes throughout the five boroughs, Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley.”
News 12 asked ICE to provide details about their presence on Long Island and about any arrests the agency made, but they would not go into more detail.
The ICE activity on Long Island comes as members of the National Guard faced off with protesters in Los Angeles on Sunday, and tear gas was fired at a growing crowd that gathered outside a federal complex hours after the federal troops arrived in the city on President Donald Trump's orders. Tensions were high after a series of sweeps by immigration authorities the previous day, as the weeklong tally of immigrant arrests in the city climbed above 100. A prominent union leader was arrested while protesting and accused of impeding law enforcement.
