8h agoThe NYPD’s aviation program gave 20 students their wings for completing the program for the very first time.
The students took part in the program that meets twice a week for six weeks to learn about the fundamentals of aviation. Some classes were held by active-duty pilots, flight attendants and airline specialists hoping to inspire future aviators.
17-year-old Kamora Freeland became the youngest African American female pilot in the country, thanks to this program.
The deputy commissioner of the NYPD says he hopes the program goes beyond Brooklyn.
"We hope to get a chance to take this to every borough, and that's always my main focus-- if something works out-- we'll get this out to Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and give all kids this opportunity," said deputy commissioner Mark Stewart.
