Nassau police want residents to know they?re cracking down on the usual Fourth of July suspects this holiday weekend ? illegal fireworks and drunken driving.
It is illegal to possess, transport or use fireworks in New York State unless licensed by the ATF, police say. Officers are also warning of the potentially explosive combination of driving with fireworks. They say if the driver got into an accident, it would pack the power of a small car bomb.
Nassau officials say 88 were arrested for DWI last Fourth of July. This year, some restaurant owners are joining forces to offer free rides to those who drink too much.
