It may not be baseball season, but one Merrick man is getting some local and national attention with his rare baseball signature collection.
Randy Kaplan has collected the signatures of nearly 125 world leaders on his baseballs.
Kaplan says he has the signature of every U.S. president going back to Richard Nixon. He says he has been very lucky in meeting the leaders as they made appearances and says that he always keeps a few baseballs in his bag, just in case.
The Merrick resident says the signature that he is most proud of is Nelson Mandela, who served as president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
Kaplan's collection is shown at presidential museums and other displays throughout the country.
