The City Council's Public Safety Committee is demanding tighter gun control laws following the fatal shooting of a police officer in Brooklyn with an illegal gun.
Chairman Peter Vallone Jr. said today that Bronx residents could easily buy illegal weapons if they want to, whether it's online or on the streets.
City Councilwoman Letitia James (D-35th District) adds, "They're either getting them on Craigslist, they're buying them in backs of cars--individuals who are traveling from southern states, Florida and Texas, bringing them to New York City."
Council members want to establish a background check procedure for all firearms sold at guns shows in New York and elsewhere.
They also suggest supporting the Gun Trafficking Prevention Act by making gun trafficking a crime, and not allowing residents of one state to lawfully carry a gun into a different state.
