Mayor Eric Adams announced a new partnership with faith-based organizations today to house the 72,000+ asylum seekers in New York.
The city partnered with New York Disaster Interfaith Services to open churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and other faith organizations to up to 1,000 asylum seekers.
Up to 50 houses of worship across the five boroughs will be providing housing, food, and resources to small groups of asylum seekers.
According to the mayor, the city has spent $1.2 billion to manage the influx of asylum seekers. He called out the federal government for only allocating $40 million to the city, which he says, is only enough for five days.
The mayor says this new partnership with faith-based organizations will help ease some of the pressure on the other shelters that are housing the asylum seekers.
The city is encouraging more faith leaders to join the program and open their doors to asylum seekers.
