The westbound Southern State Parkway has reopened between exits 18 and 19 after a tractor-trailer hit an overpass early Wednesday.
The incident happened around 3:48 a.m. in West Hempstead when the driver attempted to squeeze underneath the Eagle Avenue overpass.
Photos show the trailer part wedged in and stuck in the middle lane. The top and side were completely ripped off.
The Lakeview Fire Department says the driver of the tractor-trailer, 37-year-old Jose De La Rosa-Martinez of the Bronx, unhooked his tractor and left the scene.
He turned himself in hours after the accident and has been charged with reckless endangerment and leaving the scene.
A black SUV slammed into the back of the trailer. The driver of that vehicle, 53-year-old Kereen Wiggins of Valley Stream, suffered serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Her passenger was also injured and taken to the hospital.
The crash caused bumper-to-bumper traffic heading westbound Wednesday morning.
All lanes were back open as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, but crews were still on the scene hours later loading up debris on the sliced open trailer.
State police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them.
News 12 reached out to the trucking company for comment but had not heard back as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.
