A string of businesses is still smoking after a fire that started at Laundry Palace in Central Islip spread to other areas.

Suffolk County fire officials say they were notified of the fire around 2:15 p.m. at 18 E Suffolk Ave.

Suffolk County police say that E Suffolk Avenue is closed between Hawthorne and Carleton avenues by Wheeler Road.

They say one police officer was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Fire officials say the Central Islip Fire Department is the lead agency.

More than 20 fire departments have been called in to help fight the fire.
