A 14-year-old boy suffered serious injuries Thursday afternoon after crashing an e-bike into a stopped SUV in Westbury, according to Nassau County police.

The crash happened on Powells Lane, where authorities say the teenager was riding the e-bike and collided with an SUV that was stopped in traffic. The boy was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

The incident has renewed concerns about the growing number of e-bike crashes involving children and teenagers across Long Island.

The Westbury crash is the latest in a string of e-bike accidents that have left young riders seriously injured or dead in recent months.

In May, a 10-year-old boy in Ronkonkoma was seriously injured while riding an e-bike after being struck by an SUV on Patchogue-Holbrook Road. In April, a teenager suffered critical injuries in an e-bike crash in Greenlawn. Last November, a 14-year-old boy was killed while riding an e-bike to school in North Bellmore after being struck by a vehicle.

Cindy Brown, of the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety, said the trend is alarming, particularly because New York State law prohibits children under 16 from operating e-bikes.

"They're so readily available, and as soon as one kid gets one, another kid wants one, and it just multiplies," Brown said. "They're out there in traffic. They've never taken a driver's ed class. They don't know any rules of the road."

According to police, the driver of the SUV involved in Thursday's crash remained at the scene. No charges have been filed.
