Criminal justice students at Adelphi University held a protest and seminar Monday night that focused on the issue of excessive force used by police officers.
The protest comes after the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Grand juries in both cases decided not to indict the officers in their deaths.
Students that took part in the protest say they need to raise awareness. However, some say they don't agree with violent protests that were seen in Ferguson, Missouri.
Associate Professor Alex Vitale says officials should consider using specially trained civilians to intervene in a crisis, instead of an officer armed with a gun.
Vitale says now is really the time for communities to step up their demands for what they feel are solutions that will serve their best interests.
