Suffolk police are searching for whoever broke windows and spray-painted graffiti at the Tesla Science Center in Shoreham.
Marc Alessi from the Tesla Science Center in Shoreham was about to unveil the first phase of their restoration project, the centerpiece of Nikola Tesla's Laboratory, the Cupola and Chimney.
"Just as we were getting ready for that ceremony, we realized there was a break-in," he said. "The windows that we just restored, somebody had climbed to the top of the building, kicked in one of the restored windows and broke into the lab and graffiti the inside."
The nonprofit says it will continue efforts to restore the laboratory of Nikola Tesla, a Serbian immigrant, brilliant inventor and sometimes mad scientist, who realized his dream of erecting a giant tower that would transmit energy and information across the globe.
Tesla's laboratory is called Wardenclyffe and was designed by the New York City firm of Stanford White, another reason why this building is historically significant.
Unfortunately for Tesla, his brilliance was not realized until after he died, poor and alone. But unlike Tesla's sad ending, those who dream of making his lab into a science center say the vandalism will not deter them.
The vandalism happened sometime early last week. Police are looking for anyone with information.
