A coach bus partially plunged into an underground parking garage Monday evening after a section of asphalt gave way in the parking lot of a North New Hyde Park office building.
The dramatic incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at 1979 Marcus Ave., where the rear of the bus fell into a garage beneath the surface parking lot, leaving the front end suspended in the air. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though the bus driver was briefly trapped inside the vehicle, about seven feet above the ground, and had to be rescued.
“It just collapsed — it was like a boom,” recalled parking attendant Ricky Cody, who witnessed the scene unfold. “All our guys are running downstairs, coming up. Cars are coming in and out. So it’s scary. They wouldn’t even have known if they were driving down there.”
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, stabilizing the vehicle as crews assessed the extent of the damage. Several office workers were unable to retrieve their cars from the garage.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
