A proposal to merge a pair of East End school districts is creating quite the dilemma between parents and administrators.

Officials say their plan to merge the Southampton and Tuckahoe school districts would save around $8 million. However, the possibility of rising taxes is an issue on which parents aren't willing to budge.

According to a study commissioned by both districts, taxes in Southampton would increase by more than 8.5 percent in the first year of the merger. In Tuckahoe, school taxes would decrease by an estimated 65 percent.

Despite the hikes, Southampton Superintendent Scott Farina says the move would improve students' educational experience.

Residents in both districts will vote on the plan this Tuesday, Oct. 29. If it passes, a final vote will be taken Dec. 5.
