Nassau County's Public Safety Committee met today, but there was one topic that was noticeably absent from its discussion: the 2011 shooting of an unarmed cabbie by an off-duty Nassau police officer.

Nassau Public Safety Committee Chairman Dennis Dunne became just the latest public official to refuse to comment on the case of Nassau Police Officer Anthony DiLeonardo. Nearly two-and-a-half years ago, DiLeonardo shot cabdriver Thomas Moroughan in Huntington Station after a night of drinking with a friend.

A 375-page internal affairs report by Nassau police determined that DiLeonardo "unlawfully" shot the driver, and recommended that he be disciplined. But the officer was never criminally charged and remains on the force.

Nassau Legislator Dave Denenberg said it's up to the Nassau police commissioner to discipline the officer. Commissioner Thomas Dale has told News 12 that a disciplinary investigation into the officer is still open.
