The 35-year-old man accused of shooting NYPD Detective Brian Moore last month was indicted on 12 counts Thursday, including first-degree murder.
As News 12 has reported, Demetrius Blackwell is accused of shooting Detective Moore, of Massapequa, near 104th Road and 212th Street in Queens Village. Police say Moore and his partner were in plainclothes and in an unmarked car when they saw the suspect tug at his waistband as if he had a gun. Officials say words were exchanged, and Blackwell pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking Moore in the head.
Blackwell's attorney David Bart entered a plea of not guilty for his client and says he may be pursuing a "mental disease or defect" defense.
"We know that he has epilepsy. We know he has seizures. There's evidence of prior psychosis," said Bart. "There's possibly evidence of bipolar disorder, and these are things that we see just on an initial view."
PBA President Patrick Lynch said that Blackwell is "not insane."
"He's a bad, evil person that killed a New York City police officer," said Lynch.
Detective Moore's family and more than 100 members of the NYPD were present during Blackwell's court appearance.
