LIRR: Derailed train in East River tunnel causes delays, cancellations

The Long Island Rail Road says a disabled train in one of the East River tunnels is causing cancellations and delays on several lines during the evening rush.

A 12-car train from Penn Station bound for Hempstead derailed as it entered the East River tunnel. One out of four tunnels going into Penn is blocked due to the derailment, officials say.

Passengers are being evacuated by the MTA police, firefighters and LIRR personnel. No one was injured, the LIRR says.

Westbound service between Jamaica and Penn Station is temporarily suspended. NYC Transit is cross-honoring fares on the E train between Jamaica and Penn and on the 7 train at Woodside.

The LIRR is offering limited hourly service from Penn Station on the Babylon, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma branches. Customers for all other branches are advised to take the 2 or 3 subway lines from Penn to Atlantic Terminal for eastbound service.

The MTA says there is restricted access into Penn Station and customers are urged to delay their entry into the station.

MTA spokesman Sal Arena says that commuters should expect canceled LIRR trains Tuesday morning as crews inspect the tracks overnight. He advises that commuters check the MTA website before heading to local train stations.
