The number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits has topped 6 million for the first time, according to the latest numbers, but unemployment levels on Long Island are slightly down.
The labor department says unemployment on Long Island fell from 7.5 percent to 7.3 from February to March. New York State Labor Department economist Gary Huth says hiring usually increases as the weather becomes warmer. However, Huth says other data shows the number of jobs on Long Island fell again.
Experts say job hunters can find more opportunities in education and health care.
