Rep. George Santos appears to have been caught in another lie when he repeatedly claimed that his mother was a survivor of 9/11.
The Republican's campaign website says his mother "survived the traffic events on September 11, but she passed away a few years later when she lost her battle to cancer."
Santos also tweeted in July 2021 that "9/11 claimed my mother's life."
A deep dive into immigration records, however, shows that Santos' mother wasn't even in the country during the terrorist attacks.
A FOIL request with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services from
"The Forward" revealed that Santos' mother, Fatama Devolder, disclosed to authorities that she was in Brazil from 1999 to 2003.
Retired FDNY Lt. Michael O'Connell has a rare 9/11-related autoimmune disease and has fought on behalf of all those suffering from similar illnesses since.
"It is sad to hear that someone who should be leading this country is trying to benefit out of a day like that," O'Connell says.
John Feal, a leader and advocate for first responders and victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, was also outraged to hear about Santos' apparent lies.
"The 9/11 community has a lot of moving parts, but we all stick together when we feel like we are attacked or we are used for political gain or commercializing it," Feal says. "And you can't get any lower than this."
News 12 reached out to Santos' office and has not heard back.
