A family from Wantagh managed to escape safely when their home on Hawthorne Drive West caught fire late last night.

Ed Garcia says he woke up to the sound of smoke alarms going off inside his home. He got out of bed and saw smoke pouring up his staircase, so he woke up his wife. When they tried to get down the stairs, they were halted by flames.

The couple climbed out their window and screamed for help from their roof. Responding firefighters helped them down with a ladder, and they were treated for smoke inhalation.

The Garcias' 19-year-old son, who lives in the basement, managed to escape through an access window.

The family's dog, Buttons, was trapped in the home. Firefighters found her hiding under a bed in an upstairs bedroom. She was given oxygen and is now being treated by a veterinarian.

Ed Garcia says he believes the fire started on the first floor within a wall between the garage and an office. Fire officials say it's still unclear what caused the fire, but the home was severely damaged.
