The City of Long Beach has voted to pierce its tax cap, which will raise costs for the south shore residents.

The Republican-led city council approve a 3.75% tax increase - which comes out to about $229 per median household.

"I feel very confident to say that this is a solid budget, I wish we weren't piercing the cap but we are and we're looking forward to working on the budget immediately for next year," a city council member said.

Democrats say the council is "raising your taxes and draining city savings just to make the numbers work."

They're also upset that special meeting to approve the budget was help at 9 a.m. on a weekday while most residents were out working.

The city council retorted that there were two days of public hearings on the budget prior to the vote.
