The statewide school cellphone ban has mixed opinions on Long Island.

However, a new survey shows positive outcomes from a large majority of schools, with its first year coming to a close.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s office received nearly 600 responses when surveying teachers and administrators from across New York State about the phone-free policy that began in September 2025.

80% of respondents said implementing the policy delivered beneficial results, while 76% reported improved classroom attention, respect and student engagement.

“Teachers overwhelmingly report that without constant smartphone distractions, students are more focused on learning and more engaged with their peers,” the Governor said.

Hochul spoke to younger New York students to get their feedback, as well.

"You do see students participating more when it’s time to, and everyone’s more socializing,” one student said.

"I noticed a lot of students talking with each other more, more engaged in conversation and playing sports with each other," another noted.

60% of the educators involved in the survey also reported a decline in bullying.
