A vehicle crashed into a backyard in Hawthorne late Monday night after veering off an embankment, plowing through a fence, and landing about 15 feet below at 54 N. 8th St., authorities said.
The dramatic incident, captured on a homeowner's security camera, left a woman and a child unscathed.
Christopher Sosa, the homeowner, told News 12 New Jersey he was preparing for bed when he heard what sounded like an explosion.
"We ran outside, saw a car through the fence, right in my backyard," Sosa said. "Very frightening. You don't know what's going on."
Security footage from a camera on Sosa's roof showed the car crashing through the fence and into the yard. Sosa said the woman appeared to exit the vehicle on her own, and a child was in the backseat.
"Somebody helped them out, and the girl just walked through the yard like nothing happened," he said. "Both apparently unscathed."
Sosa reviewed the video with police officers and the fire chief at the scene. No injuries were reported, though the cause of the crash remains unclear. The video shows the vehicle coming from the parking lot of Millview Lofts before going over the embankment.
Hawthorne police have not released the driver's identity or details about what led to the crash.
Sosa noted the incident could have been worse.
"Big backyard. Summertime, could've been back here," he said, relieved no one was in the yard at the time.
