A recent study conducted by the National Transportation Research nonprofit "TRIP" shows one-third of Long Island's major roads are in poor or mediocre condition.

Richard Sayres, who owns Holbrook MTA Auto Service, says one tire repair could cost hundreds or thousands depending on the car.
"If you hit a pothole and you ruin one tire and rim on a BMW, it could be thousands of dollars," he said.
Car professionals say an improperly inflated tire is more likely to blow out when you hit a pothole. Drivers should rotate tires every 10,000 miles so they last longer.
"A lot of times, potholes are disguised in puddles, so you really don't know it. So, if you can avoid a puddle, wherever you can, especially if you're driving at a little bit of a higher rate of speed, I would try and do that," said Sayres.
Sayres say regular car insurance typically does not cover tires, but tire insurance may help if yours is damaged by a pothole.
