Bridgeport's Deputy School Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery, was appointed acting superintendent Tuesday night, eight days after the superintendent herself, Dr. Carmela Levy-David, went on medical leave amid controversy surrounding her leadership.
The move at Tuesday night's regularly scheduled school board meeting came following a survey by the Connecticut Education Association - the state's biggest teachers' unions - showing 97% of teachers who responded have no confidence in Levy-David's leadership.
The union said she "ignored concerns expressed by staff and behaved in an unprofessional manner in her dealings with them."
Dr. Avery - who, like Levy-David, came from Texas -- was appointed one month after Levy-David was hired one year ago.
As Avery now runs the school district on an interim basis, the board is contemplating the fate of Levy-David's contract.
If the board were to vote to terminate her contract, it would have to do so by Wednesday, Nov. 13, officials said.
Levy-David has not responded to News 12's request for a comment.
