Less than two weeks after being struck by a vehicle in Hunterdon County, a bear cub being treated at a wildlife refuge has died.

Woodlands Wildlife Refuge, located in Pittstown, posted on Facebook shortly after the cub was brought to its facility on July 29. The refuge said the juvenile bear was “presumably hit by a car” and found on the side of Rick Road in Alexandria Township.

The 35-pound bear was initially treated at the Animal Hospital of Clinton-Perryville. The refuge said she was unconscious but still alive when she was discovered. Despite her ordeal, the bear did not suffer any broken bones or internal injuries, according to tests performed at the animal hospital. She did, however, suffer a concussion.

On July 29, the refuge said Aurora—named by the veterinary staff—was showing signs of improvement. A few days later, the cub remained in critical condition, and staff said on social media that she was unconscious most of the time, although she did manage to stand at one point.

On Aug. 3, Woodlands Wildlife Refuge posted the sad update that Aurora had succumbed to her injuries.

“Sadly, we need to share that Aurora Bear gave up the good fight and passed away peacefully overnight. We deeply appreciate the incredible teamwork from our veterinarians, staff and volunteers who did the absolute best for her. We thank all of you for your kind wishes and support,” the refuge wrote. “We will always try our best.”

Woodlands Wildlife Refuge opened in 1986. In addition to education, its mission is to care for and release orphaned and injured wildlife back into their natural habitat. The organization also created and implemented New Jersey’s black bear rehabilitation and release program.
