A Brentwood community is turning its concern for earthquake victims in Colombia into action.
Just one day after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the country, La Espiguita Soccer Academy is collecting donations for families who lost their homes or need basic supplies.
Organizers are asking people to donate clothing, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries and other essential items.
Community members say the effort hits close to home for many Colombian families on Long Island who still have loved ones and friends in the country.
“My feet is always in Colombia, we have friends and family," said Alexandra Yanez of North Babylon. "It hurts to see our people suffering. As a community, we need to be here for them."
The drive began Tuesday and runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations will continue through Friday.
