For many veterans, the toughest battles begin after military service ends. For some, finding stable housing can become even more difficult when beloved pets are involved.
Irshaad Mohammed found himself living in his car after being denied temporary housing because he had two cats. Despite the hardship, giving up his pets was never an option.
"They're my babies," Mohammed said. "My main concern is them more so than my well-being."
Mohammed says his cats play an important role in his treatment for PTSD and depression.
To help veterans facing similar situations, Long Island-based nonprofit Paws of War has partnered with organizations such as Beacon House to provide temporary foster care for pets while veterans transition into permanent housing.
Veteran Victor Menendez is among those benefiting from the program. He visits his cats daily while working toward securing a stable home.
"They're my family," Menendez said.
According to Paws of War co-founder Robert Misseri, more veterans are being denied temporary housing because they have pets, creating additional challenges during an already difficult period.
+"That's their lifeline," Misseri said.
Although the organization is facing space limitations, Misseri says Paws of War continues to go the extra mile to keep veterans connected to their animals. The program highlights the vital bond many veterans share with their pets and the role that connection can play in recovery, stability, and the journey toward finding a permanent home.
