An arrest has been made in the murders of a young mother and her toddler in North Bay Shore.
Shakeela Planter, 21, and her 2-year-old son Jaiden were found dead in their apartment on South Cardinal Court by their landlord Friday. Police say there was no sign that anyone broke into their apartment. Investigators say Planter was stabbed repeatedly, bound and wrapped in plastic. Her son, Jaiden, was beaten to death and wrapped in plastic before being shoved in the freezer. Police say that they were likely killed on Dec. 18.Jerry Lewis, 24, who lives at the same address, has been charged with second-degree murder. Police believe that Lewis is a possible ex-boyfriend or was in a platonic relationship with Planter.
After the murders, cops say Lewis took Planter's car and ditched it on Long Island before taking a train to his mother?s house in Maryland. Four Suffolk County homicide detectives went to Maryland on Christmas Eve to make the arrest. The landlord who made the grisly discovery spoke exclusively to News 12 Long Island. Frenly Delossantos says returning to his Bay Shore home is difficult. "Honestly, I don't feel like I'm going to live here anymore... I don't want to have to do anything with this," he says. He described the Lewis as a quiet man who "looked harmless." He says he never heard him argue with Planter. Lewis is being held in Maryland. A date for his extradition hearing has not yet been set.
