Brooklyn residents and Puerto Ricans celebrated their heritage during the sixth annual Knickerbocker Avenue Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday.

Hundreds of people showed up, dressed in traditional dresses, skirts and other outfits to display their culture.

Many shared with News 12 how they are so grateful to live in a time where they can showcase pride for their heritage, adding their parents couldn't do the same when they first arrived in the United States.

“The original reason why the Puerto Rican Day parade was established on Knickerbocker [Avenue] was because back in the day, there was no such thing as shutting down the block," a Bushwick resident said. "So, we created our own parade”

Paradegoers said it gets bigger and better each year, and they love that it's right in Brooklyn. Others were on the street corners making food for the whole block.

“We're out here barbequing on Knickerbocker [Avenue] doing the thing for Puerto Rican Day," another Bushwick resident said.

The celebration continued from Menahan Street to Jefferson Street.

News 12's Daniella Rodriguez was at the parade and has some of the event's highlights.
