Twenty-two cats and kittens that were left without food or water were rescued from an abandoned home on Taylor Street in Centerport.
Beth Cotter, who lives next door from the home, says she and other neighbors fed the cats and for help. The Town of Huntington Cat Shelter responded.
David Ceely, the shelter's executive director, says the smell inside the abandoned home was overwhelming and there was clutter everywhere. He says it felt like an episode of the TV series "Hoarders."
Cellphone video from inside the home shows flies and feces throughout, a stovetop burner left on and no food or water for the cats.
News 12 is told that the occupants of the house were evicted a few weeks ago and left the cats behind.
Six of the cats are now well enough to be adopted. The Town of Huntington Cat Shelter is holding an adoption event this Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
Cotter has already adopted of the cats, saying she couldn't resist her cute face.
