The final day of early voting brought large crowds to polling locations across Long Island, including a voting site in Massapequa where voters lined up throughout the day.
At the Massapequa location, lines stretched through the hall, out the door, and down the sidewalk. Poll workers said turnout remained steady and heavy all day long.
One poll worker, who has worked elections for five years, said the site has seen 50% more voters each day compared with last year. In previous years, the location typically saw between 500 and 800 voters. This year, daily turnout has ranged from 1,300 to 1,500 voters.
According to the Nassau County Board of Elections, more than 175,000 voters had cast ballots during early voting across the county. Suffolk County officials reported more than 157,000 early voters as of Saturday night.
Both totals were expected to increase on the final day of early voting.
Massapequa resident Margaret Kelly said casting a ballot is an important responsibility.
"I got to get my vote counted and have things go in a positive direction here for Long Island…" Kelly said. "Come out and vote. Make your voices heard. This is really very important."
Sunday marked the final day of early voting, with most polling locations scheduled to close at 6 p.m. Voters who were unable to cast a ballot during the early voting period will still have the opportunity to vote on Election Day.
