The Port Jefferson School District says it has been granted a special hearing with Section XI as it works to get varsity football players back on the field.
As News 12 previously reported, varsity season was cancelled because the district says it did not have enough players.
Superintendent Jessica Schmettan says the district expected a proposal combining programs with Rocky Point to be accepted by Section XI. However, Executive Director Tom Combs says the request was made too late.
"They can combine, there's some misinformation out there, they could have combined before our placement meeting in February when we put everything together. {white flash} They also have the ability to do it at this time but our rules state after our placement meeting if you combine the program is ineligible for playoffs,” he explained.
Schmettan says the merger would have made Rocky Point the host district and kept its schedule in place without disruption.
Instead, Rocky Point will keep their agreement with Port Jeff in place for its combined JV squad.
