A multifamily home in Poughkeepsie is being demolished after it was deemed uninhabitable.

A report came in around 10:30 a.m. Thursday for a potential, partial collapse at 11 North Hamilton Street.

"I had one of my inspectors come out. When they got here, they found that there was a lot of bricks that fell off the house, and there's also many structural fractures and cracks throughout the whole structure," said Eric Philipp, a building inspector with the City of Poughkeepsie.

Officials say a decision was reached to bring the building down.

Residents told News 12 that they didn't get much time to get their things from inside.

"I still have stuff in there, but most of it, I guess it has to be gone," said Jose Agustin, who lived in the building.

There were several units inside the building.

No one was hurt, according to emergency crews.

However, residents tell News 12 that they're now trying to figure out what's next.

"I don't think it's really set in yet," said Rich Owens, who also lives in the building.

Agustin said he has brought concerns up in the past about the building. There's no confirmation from officials at this point on what led up to this.

News 12 asked the owner of the building if there have been prolonged issues there.

"No, there was none. We had it all fixed, it's been inspected and stuff," said building owner Lester Runza.

News 12 also asked the city's building inspector if there have been recent reports at this location.

"There has been no activity in the building department system since 2017," said Philipp.

The demolition is expected to continue into Friday.
