‘They were very fatigued,’ 2 teens pulled away by rip current and rescued in Cutchogue

Officials say two teens were rescued from the water in Cutchogue after getting drawn out by the current.
Cutchogue fire officials tell News 12 the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday near Duck Pond Point.
There was a report of a 23-foot boat that was disabled and adrift, officials say. Two of its passengers were out swimming when they became separated from the boat due to the current. The boat was about 2 miles from shore.
The Cutchogue Fire Department responded and began rescue efforts with assistance from the Southold Town Police Department.
Firefighters on the rescue boat spotted the swimmers. “They were very fatigued, they were lucky they were young and be able to hang on that long,” said Cutchogue Fire Department Lt. Christian Figurniak.
One teen told rescuers he couldn’t move his arms and legs and the other was caught in rope and only able to move her arm to stay above water.
“Another few minutes, it could have been a different story,” said Cutchogue Fire Department Capt. Joe Hinton.
Officials say the teens were not wearing flotation devices.
Both were OK and went home with their parents.
