The discovery of a woman's body in a canal Saturday has left Massapequa residents on edge as police probe the crime.
Police said a woman walking her dog found the body in a canal on the Nassau-Suffolk line at the end of Trebor Road. Detectives spent Saturday and Sunday combing the area and looking for the victim's missing shoe.
Neighbors are shaken by the death. "We were upstairs, and we looked outside and saw the body in the water face down," said Stephen Hayes. "I can't even tell you the words, especially this time of year."
Residents believe the woman is from the area, however, Nassau police are not releasing the victim's identity until her family is notified. The body is at the medial examiner's office.
