New York State Police continue to look into what happened moments before a car left the road on the Southern State Parkway in a crash that left two dead and seriously injured two more in North Massapequa.
According to officials, the crash happened around 11 Sunday night at exit 31S for North Broadway.
Drivers said that the stretch of the parkway is notoriously bad for speeding.
"I'm surprised but I'm not surprised to put it that way," North Massapequa resident Paula Almeida said. "It's sad. It's very sad."
"The exit is something a lot of people get used to over time and I could see how that could be a problem," one driver said.
Investigators spent hours overnight into the early morning looking for evidence and combing through what was left of the mangled car flipped in the grassy median between the off and on-ramps to the parkway.
Even after the crash was cleared evidence of the incident was still left behind including a scattering of car parts, the exit sign torn down and collision marks on a tree.
“The Southern State Parkway going east between exits 29 to 31, frequent accidents because people are zigging in and out and they’re speeding," driver Ashley McQueen said.
The crash closed a mile stretch of the parkway for 6.5 hours before the road reopened around 5:30 this morning.
This incident is under investigation and state police are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to call (631) 756-3300.
