The summer season officially starts Friday night, and as temperatures continue to climb, it's important to make sure you and your family stay cool.
All Westchester County-owned beaches will be open for the start of the summer season on Saturday and Sunday. That includes Playland Beach in Rye, Glen Island Beach in New Rochelle and Croton Point Beach in Croton-on-Hudson.
All beaches will then officially open with the summer season schedules next weekend. Playland Beach and Glen Island Beach will be open daily, while Croton Point Beach will continue to be open on only Saturdays and Sundays.
Many residents who walk Playland's boardwalk every morning are excited for the beach to officially open, including one local official.
“[I come here] every morning, [and] sometimes I come in the afternoon," said Port Chester Mayor Luis Marino. "It’s a great place…I love it. I enjoy it. I want to make sure everyone is safe through the summer and let’s enjoy it.”
Meanwhile, the Westchester County Health Department has closed two more beaches ahead of the start of summer. Hudson Park East Beach in New Rochelle and Harbor Island Beach in Mamaroneck will be closed until further notice. The closures come after two samples showed their waters have an excess amount of bacteria in them.
Two beaches in Mohegan Lake additionally remain closed until further notice. Mohegan Colony Association and Mohegan Beach Park District both closed on June 10 due to harmful algae blooms.
For those who prefer to cool off at the pool, all county-owned pools in Westchester County will open on Friday, June 27.
Meanwhile, in Rockland County, Lake Welch Beach in Stony Point will open for the swimming season on Saturday. Nyack Beach State Park is open year-round, where visitors can kayak and windsurf.
In Orange County, Lake Tiorati Beach in Tuxedo also opens for the season on Saturday.
