Police: Off-duty Suffolk PD officer strikes pedestrian in Huntington, charged with DWI

According to police, Alexander Vargas was driving southbound on Carver Street when he struck a Huntington Station man who was running westbound across New York Avenue at 2:30 a.m.

An off-duty Suffolk County police officer was arrested early Sunday morning, accused of driving while intoxicated and striking a pedestrian in Huntington, police say.

According to police, Alexander Vargas was driving southbound on Carver Street when he struck a Huntington Station man who was running westbound across New York Avenue at 2:30 a.m.

The victim, whom police identified as 28-year-old Jorge Alfaro, was taken to Huntington Hospital with serious injuries.

Vargas, of Babylon, was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Detectives say the 30-year-old, who is assigned to the Suffolk County Police Second Precinct, was suspended without pay following the crash.

The Major Case Unit detectives ask anyone with any information about the crash to call 631-852-6553.
