Residents in West Babylon are concerned Friday after the discovery of dead birds in the Grant Avenue canal.
About a dozen dead ducks and geese were found floating in the canal Thursday afternoon. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will take the birds for testing. Residents were alarmed because the canal is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can carry the potentially fatal West Nile virus.
Some residents are concerned about the environment and believe the dead birds are connected to a sewage treatment plant nearby. DEC officials say the plant is in compliance with all the rules. The results of the testing on the birds is expected in a few days.
