Superintendent: Wolves will be new mascot for Wyandanch Schools

The move comes as the school looks to comply with the state's 2023 requirement that school districts discontinue the use of mascots that reference Native American names or imagery.

AB: The move comes as the school looks to comply with the state's 2023 requirement that school districts discontinue the use of mascots that reference Native American names or imagery.

The Wyandanch Union Free School District has officially chosen a new mascot name - the Wyandanch Wolves.

The Board of Education officially adopted a resolution for the updated mascot at a meeting this week, according to Superintendent Dr. Erik Wright.

The move comes as the school looks to comply with the state's 2023 requirement that school districts discontinue the use of mascots that reference Native American names or imagery.

"The selection of the Wolves mascot was the clear front-runner through these surveys, and we believe it will serve as a symbol of strength, unity and pride for current and future generations of Wyandanch students," Wright said in a letter to the school community.

The school district says that a design will be chosen by a committee that will serve as inspiration for the official mascot.
