A Long Island radio personality who went on a riff of trailer park jokes about Mastic apologized Monday.
WBLI-FM's morning co-host Randy Spears delivered both an on-air and on-camera apology. He said he spent the weekend driving around and saw that "there are no trailer parks in Mastic-Shirley."
Spears was suspended from the station on Thursday after he refused to apologize for making trailer trash jokes about the community when a woman from Mastic called in for a station contest the day before. Outraged community members and leaders immediately called for an apology. WBLI management followed suit, days before Spears issued his own mea culpa.
In his apology, Spears said he learned the community had million-dollar homes along the Great South Bay, had beautiful parks and was home to William Floyd, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Paul Breschard, of the Mastic Community Coalition, said Spears' apology seemed genuine. "We don't want to see him fired," said Breschard. However, not all residents believed the apology was sincere.
Spears said in the future he will be more sensitive. However, he also said he also wants to keep the mood light. ??we have to have fun,? Spears said. ?It is time to have fun in America.? Spears is expected to return to the airwaves Tuesday.
