Drivers on Long Island could soon see some relief at the gas pump as President Donald Trump looks to suspend the federal gas tax.
The Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association says suspending the federal gas tax would lower prices by about 18 to 20 cents per gallon. Diesel would go down 29 cents.
Drivers had mixed reactions to the proposal.
Some said any savings would help as families continue dealing with rising costs and prepare for Memorial Day travel.
“If they can do that it would help,” said Sal Staccuneddu. “We’ve cut down on groceries, and we’ve cut down on going out.”
“I don’t think 18 cents is going to make up what we are going to lose in that tax revenue really,” said Glenn Gibbons.
The Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association also says if New York state freezes its gas tax, drivers could save an additional 26 to 30 cents per gallon.
News 12 reached out to the governor’s office, as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties, for comment but has not yet heard back.
