The Town Board in Islip unanimously voted to make it illegal for homeowners to offer short-term rentals on their properties.
On Morgan Lane in Bayport, residents say the owner of house No. 5 has caused disruption to their quality of life by renting the property for wedding parties, prom parties and movie shoots.
Neighbors say the problem began about three years ago, and slowly increased in magnitude to the point where residents couldn't find parking on their own street during rental events.
The new law bans rentals for less than 14 nights, but excludes properties on Fire Island.
An attorney for property owner Joe Ialacci told the board that they can't have selective enforcement of town code.
"You're opening yourself up and you're going to end up writing a check," attorney Raymond Negron warned the board.
Other towns have already implemented similar rental bans.
In August, the Southold Town Board approved a minimum of 14 nights for rentals of privately owned homes.
